Ismar painted this forest scene while he attended Berlin’s Städtische Kunstgewerbe- und Handwerkerschule, Charlottenberg. After painting the image on glass and scratching away parts of the design so that the brilliance of the silver would show through, the whole was covered in silver leaf and viewed through the glass. Hinterglassmalerei or verre églomisé, in other words, reverse glass painting with applied silver leaf, sometime between 1928 and 1932.
